Came across this wonderful talent ages ago, and keep checking back to see if and when her etsy shop will be stocked. No news yet :( Love these coasters as inspiration for a simple party invite for the girls. I am a fan of simple, old fashion birthday parties and all things lovingly and handmade.

Something about these is lovely.
PS. The girls are 8 months old today, and I must be thinking about how to celebrate all the small wonderful moments that are going by way to fast.

I was taking a moment yesterday afternoon, just to rest and recharge. Since the house was filled with the sounds of the family, my "resting moments were spent on the computer reading some favorite blogs..quickly coming to Jordan's Happy New Year's post.
Struck by how similar our thoughts were..both about the week between the holidays and the New Year itself.

First off, I have always loved the week between the holiday's. In the past often going away and spending time recharging. Over the last few years, often using it as a week to hang out with the family in a way that is only possible at this time of year, taking stock and getting organized. In years past, the busy weeks leading up to the holidays, had a very different tone. Thinking so much about gifts for the kids, the holiday plans and running around to holiday events and parties with the kids. Over the last few years, work topics weighing heavily on my mind, and occupying my thoughts.
This year in the weeks leading up to the holidays were totally different. A personal and work routine that had a totally different rythym, a decision with my husband to seriously lessen the amount of gifts, and choosing to participate in only the things that had real meaning for us and for the kids. I am sure as well, the thoughts of what rituals we wanted to create with the girls were burried deep in my mind, but in simply following my heart, it became a time of letting go and becoming.

A few weeks ago, Walking into our packed garage, filled with "Stuff" from years past. Too many clothes, books that no longer inspired as they had, gifts that while thoughtful, did not really get used, paperwork that no longer needed to be held onto and some things that no longer had a place in our home or my heart.
I was finally ready to let go and I did.
One day, during this time, I woke up and started thinking about all the things that I needed and wanted to do, that I had not completed. Making a list the next morning, in the early hours, I worked over the last few days to take care of the have to do's and with 1 thing pending, know that I will get it all done in the next few days. It feels really good.

Next up, reaching out to some people that I had wanted to connect with, but for a variety of reasons, did not in the final months of the year as planned.

Finally a small list of things that I wanted to do at the beginning of the year to start the year off right...

So, as I think about 2010 my thoughts and hopes are simple..some carry over from 2009, a year of great learning.
Clean, Simple, Clear..A year of few things and focus on the lessons I have learned from years gone by.

1. Live what I love-Continue to speak from the heart, spend quality time with friends and family and connect with those that I love, spend time doing what is important to me and our family.
Let go as needed...of things, people and relationships that after honest conversations and deep exploration.
2. Enjoy simple pleasures-Fresh flowers at home, weekly trips to the farmers market and healthy food, daily excercise and water!
3. Don't overcommit and take care of what is needed at the time..making dr's apts, dealing with something unpleasant..you know the drill..It allows me to then be totally present in what is really important.
4. Become a student-
Learn and truly practice Yoga...found a great Bikram studio nearby and love their learning philosophy. Over the years as I've dabbled in Yoga and Pilates, Bikram was the one form of yoga that I loved.
Take a photography class-waiting for the Spring schedule from Susannah Conway and a class my husband discovered nearby
5. Live the good life ( borrowed the term from Jordan! )
Wear the beautiful clothes I do have ( and not think about adding to my closet! ) everyday..learn a simple and elegant makeup routine and use it daily ( think I am on my way here..finally, at the age of 41 !) play music and light candles at home ( again, carrying this over from 2009..it was wonderful. ) and enjoy the art of cooking with My Husband and for our family. Have causal parties for friends and family. Take time to read during the week..one of the many books in our home library and eventually from the local library which is fantastic.

Here is to a wonderful New Year..filled with love, laughter and learning...

The kids could not be more excited about the idea of staying up until midnight..I could not be more thankful for the amazing year full of love, learning and incredible friends. A year ago, I could never have imagined all that this year would bring, and the friends and community that I would find on line as well. There is so much to reflect on, be grateful for and connect with..and have found moments over the last few weeks to do just that. Over the next few hours and long weekend, more reflection, connecting and thinking about what 2010 might bring and what I hope it will be all about.
As I learned clearly in 2009, love, laugh and truly live what you love.

A New Look..for a New Year?

Love the week between Christmas and the New Year...hanging out with family, playing simple board games, reflecting on the year and thinking about all that the coming days and months have in store. For some reason, always a favorite time to get organized, take stock and regroup.

For some reason, as I think about the days and months ahead, love the idea of a fresh updated hairstyle..Keep seeing this photo ( of one of my favorite women..) and wondering if there is ANY way I can pull off the hairstyle...

My Bread

A little late to the party no doubt, but read about this book ( and do miss some of my old NY Favorites...Sullivan Street Bakery is one :)
and was thrilled when it appeared under the tree.

The book got rave reviews when it came out, and for some reason over the last few months, a number of people recommended it.
Have been doing a bit of baking during the holiday break, and looking forward to more in the New Year.
This week..have earmarked a few recipes from this treasure of a book. What better then fresh bread, foccacia and pizza's in the winter months ahead. The perfect Sunday activity.

A Sweet Ride

I can not wait to ride this little beauty to the farmers market next Saturday..and every Saturday there after.
The girl and I already have plans...and thank you to Mr. W we are dreaming up other jaunts around town.
I can picture a pile of books in the back and cycling home from the library...a picnic in the park...

The picture does not do it justice. It is a treasure and I am quite sure we will be smiling from ear to ear riding it around town.

Holiday Reflections

A year filled with all that the Holiday season should have..or should I say, what I have always most wanted.
1. Our Family, and the first Christmas with our beautiful daughters and a house filled with Kids and laughter
2. Great memories; watching both Mr. J and Miss S recite poems so beautifully and confidently in their school concert; the cousins holding and totally connecting with their youngest and newest family members; the grandparents faces and joy as they watched the girls enjoy Christmas dinner from the high chairs that they fixed up just for the occasion, laughing with friends in the days and weeks as we connected, shared, and helped each other, experiencing all that the season brings.
3. Dear Friends; and a coming together through joy and pain. Connecting in the most wonderful way with long lost friends from days gone by...
4. Giving; A morning with friends helping those in need during a time of year when so much is about giving of the material kind..
An outing with the Mr and Girls to deliver to moms to be gifts and necessities to make the coming months a bit easier ( and I hope what will be the first of many days of giving and service )
5. Treasuring; Watching the kids as they opened their gifts and helped their new sisters discover their toys ( and the joy of eating wrapping paper ) Noticing, that they were appreciative of the few special things they got, and less focused on the quantity of gifts, holiday music, the roaring fire, funny movies at night...
A treasured and coveted gift from the Mr and a few other romantic treats...
The unexpected gift from a new group of important people in my life..who took the time to seek out something that was so special and generous that a few weeks later I am still glowing.

As I look back, and as we spend time as a family during the week between the holidays, I keep reflecting on all that we have, and all that we have become in this last year. For so many reasons, I feel more complete, more peaceful, and incredibly grateful for all that we have in our lives. Oddly enough, cleaning out the garage ( still a bit more to complete in the next few days )
I was stuck by how much I have acquired and accumulated over the years. As I must have been finally ready to let much of it go, packing up bags for charities, books for the library and gifts it occurred to me that I spent so much time thinking about what I might want and should get.
For some reason, it never filled the space I was looking to fill. The space, I realize finally is filled. With the family, the true friends and the person I most want to be, and am yet to become. I am, I realize desirous of spending my time doing, learning, failing, exploring. And while yes, I shall always appreciate beautiful things, I need not own them all.

So looking forward to another amazing year, and to all that it brings...

I'm Back and thank you..

There has been so much going on over the last few months, I don't even know where to begin. Unlike other times in my life when changes were happening ( or needed to happen ) I was totally committed to being present, and to allow myself to completely experience and feel everything as it came up. Without needing to go into too much detail, I woke up this morning, and knew in more ways then one, that I was back. That staying present and strong, and most importantly true to myself and my most important relationships ( with my husband and children ) allowed me to give voice to and act on what matters to me.

I have learned over and over that the most important thing in the world is the love of family, being honest and kind, and pushing yourself to do your personal best. While I have done those things in my personal life these last years, it was not necessarily true of my life at work, which was for me the first time ever that this was the case. It felt good these last months to stay the course, speak from the heart and connect with what was missing for me.

So many exciting things ahead, and a future of professional work, projects and partnerships that I could not be more excited about. A life that is full and complete, and a family and friends that I feel honored and lucky to have.

As I get ready to return to this blog, and develop other creative projects, a huge thank you to the friends here that I have made along the way. The support, kindness and the constant inspiration has been a gift. I thank you.

So yes, I am on a budget, and yes, after a year of wearing my husbands clothes, the same outfit repeatedly and full enjoying all of the foods that I desired a little bit of a wardrobe update is in order. The funny thing is, I also think of myself a bit differently and the desire is to have a bit of uniform with fewer pieces and things that I love. I think back at some of the splurges I have made and realize it is those lovely few pieces, mixed with my Levi's and J Crew knit tops that have become the base of this look. Ironically as well-trying things I would never have tried before..Hmmm more on that later.

Given the economic enviornment, pretty easy to do all of this on a tight budget.
In any event, as I thought about the slim jeans I wanted to wear ( and the fantastic Citizens Avedon Jeans I was gifted from a dear old friend ) I knew that the splurge of the season would be some great black boots. Alas, perfection. Landed on an authentic dress riding boot from Ariat. Can't wait for these to arrive. Why find some "version" that has been redone when you can have the real deal?

Shabby Chic Couture

Life has a funny way of happening, and when one is true to one self, seriously the right path unfolds.
Was so disappointed when I had heard that Shabby Chic was closing, so many reasons, and most of all a sign of the economic times in more ways then we could know. At the heart of it all, a really talented woman, who knows what she loves and worked for years to bring it to life.
Was thrilled when I started to hear rumblings, and then got the email that the LA store was opening and NYC would soon follow. Happy for her and to see what treasures were in store for me as well! I also missed the energy and people that would often visit our store ( we are neighbors on Montana Ave in Santa Monica ) before or after a visit to Shabby Chic.

Happened to be in LA last week, and had the chance to stop by. It is the perfect shop..true to Shabby Chic yet updated in the perfect way, love the raw wood pieces, as always the upholstered finds and the scale and freshness of it all. This book is sure to be added to my library, and I can't wait to go to one of her book signings.

Most of all, I salute Rachel as she built and rebuilt her dream.

So, we have a wedding to go to this weekend, and as usual wondered what to wear. Was in LA for the day and ran into a friend who has fantastic taste. I had stopped for a moment to get a bite to eat, and the next thing you know, was standing in Calyspo, staring at this stunning dress. With her encouragement, and I admit a very reasonable price tag hanging in front of me, I slipped into the fitting room and tried it on. Perfection. The photo does not do it justice. Trust me, on the beach with flats, or all dressed up a piece of heaven for a mere $225.00

Meanwhile Calypso is so nicely updated these days, I am crazy for this sweater also.

Isle Jacobsen Boots

I have coveted my Hunter boots for 5 years...Wearing them from the first rain to the end of Winter ( don't laugh, there is a winter in California! )
Year one was all about the Green, a versatile color that worked with everything. Then, for Christmas a few years ago, My mother in law gave be a pair in Navy. Also, perfect..and easy to wear with dark jeans, sweaters and jackets from November until the end of February. Both of these boots have gotten more wear then any other shoes I have owned and I might add, saved many a shoe I did own and use to wear in the rain.
Alas, I am setting myself up for a purchase. Validating how these will also be as coveted, used and adored. This pair of wellies from Isle Jacobsen is just a step forward from the traditional. Imagining them in Black, I love the idea of a little update and additional color...Should I or Shouldn't I?

Sheer Joy-Maira Kalman back at the New York Times

Somehow, I missed the fact that Maira Kalman was back at the New York Times. Yesterday morning, I discovered her again and with sheer joy shared her work and read numerous passages out loud to my husband. ( who i might add, was trying to do his own share of Sunday morning reading during 15 minutes of unusual peace & quiet ) With him focused on the NYT, and me falling in love with each of her posts the day was off to a wonderful beginning...Cuddly, sleepy babies and now this!

We're Moving!

As you may have noticed, have not been blogging much. Not that many thoughts, ideas and a ton of inspiration is not swimming around in my head but....
We are moving!
Now that the girls are 10 weeks old and our family of seven has more then outgrown our current space, we are thrilled to have found a new place to call home. Moving just a mile away, but the purging, prepping and packing has been all consuming. In addition to the physical move, so many transformative thoughts and plans that we've been working through.

So , stay tuned, missing the blogging world, but eager to get our family and home set up.

Will be back by month's end. Can't wait. So much to share.

I love wicker. Plain and Simple, Indoors and Out. We have a fabulous set of black wicker chairs outside on our patio, and when we move, I keep thinking about how fabulous they would be indoors in a kitchen or dining area..

Which, of course got me thinking. I keep seeing the Martha Stewart Channel Islands Collection, and I must say I think it is fabulous. I can totally picture the sofa, chairs and tables in any outdoor space. With a pile of magazines and morning coffee or a group of friends, beverages and ice cream sandwiches the perfect place from which to hang out and catch up.

I also love the sofa and chairs in doors....

Rough Luxe Part 2-Excursions

So while yesterday's post may not have been seasonally appropriate, I can't stop myself from sharing some of the fabulous hotels and locale's I was reading and thinking about this weekend.

With us all being on a tighter budget, places that are chic, stylish and affordable make the top of my list.
This fabulous hotel group has properties in Cape Town, St. Moritz and Costa Brava as well as this spot in London.

Loved the charm and design aesthetic of this spot and think it would be a great place to stay.
With a tea room and coffee bar, a small spa area and located near King's Cross, seems like the perfect spot from which to explore London.

Wanderlust- Korakia Pensione

So far, Bed rest has been going pretty well. After a few false alarms late last week though, I was a bit antsy this weekend, and found myself longing to get out and explore the world. Over the last few weeks, having kept surprisingly busy with work ( doing mostly creative design and development work ), personal and over due to do's and connecting a bit with old friends I have not thought much about travels outside the home. With family and our new additions on my mind, continued awareness about the importance of staying connected to what is in my heart and building a rich life with my husband, a feeling of peace and contentment.

I did start to think about family trips, a few romantic getaways with the Mister and the thought of our kids, or us travelling or living abroad at some point in the future. Wouldn't you know, I came across a few places as I flipped through magazines this weekend, some that we had been to and some on the list for the future.

So here we go...
Korkia Pensione in Palm Springs..Scott and I spent a long weekend here in the late fall. One word-Heaven. With stylish and really reasonably priced rooms this should be a must on every ones list of romantic getaways.

The recipe for the perfect weekend
-Reservations and simple packing-dresses, shoes, mag/book, sunglasses
-Drive and arrive early Friday morning
-Relax and Hang by the pool, play games, retire to your room
-Dinner in town
-Morning wake up, coffee, fruit and paper outdoors
-Morning Yoga ( complimentary at the hotel 0
-Hiking in Joshua Tree
-Drinks and Dinner under the stars at the Parker
-Morning, wake up and repeat-breakfast and yoga
-Massage
-Leisurely drive home.

Came across an article and realized that my love of cut arts carried over from simple and elegant silhouettes to these more extravagant art forms .Piles of tear sheets and a fabulous realization....Rob Ryan a British Artist who has turned this craft into a beautiful art form, has a shop on Etsy!

If you love his work as much as I do, you will be thrilled to know that he will have an instillation at the Earnest Sewn shop in the Meatpacking District until the end of May.

Petersham Nurseries Cafe

Would love to take a visit to Petersham Nursery and the Cafe in Surrey.
The shop which you can tour on line looks like the ultimate in English Gardening. The Cafe which is run by Skye Gyngell has become one of the most difficult reservations to secure due to her fabulous cooking and approach to the weekly menu she creates. Entirely dependent on the gifts of the garden and the seasons, just reading it makes me hungry.

For those of us who have no immediate plans to go to England, her cookbooks look fantastic ( and would make a great gift! )

Grey Gardens...The Gardens today

Yesterday ( while following my prescribed bed rest ) on a beautiful spring day, I watched the new Grey Gardens. Having seen the original which was interesting for sure, but also a bit disturbing, I did not really know what to expect. As someone who has always loved interesting people of style, the history of the 1930's and the Hampton's, this movie had all the ingredients for the perfect film. It did not disappoint. I so love how they mixed the back story with clips and the making of the original film, seeing the house as it was in hits previous state full of life and beauty and the relationship between mother and daughter so honestly portrayed.
This is truly one not to miss. Fascinated as well by the story of Little Edie, and how she finally left the home shared with her mom, and made her way back to New York, and eventually Florida. Loving the fact that the home was sold for only $220,000 in 1979 to Sally Quinn and Benjamin Bradley with the understanding that they would restore it. Restore this beautiful home they did...the gardens are to die for, and the recent article in The New York times and the evolution of this fabulous property is exquisite.

Outdoor living

As everyone in California knows, we have been having a bit of a heat wave...
The warm weather, time at home and April days at the pool have me think of summer and how much I adore this time of year.
As we look for a new place to live, can't help but to daydream about an outdoor space where we can gather, hangout and eat as many meals as possible outdoors. To me, one of the best parts of this time of year is truly being outside as much as possible.

This lovely outdoor spot from Skona Hem was the perfect image to capture these daydreams.

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ok, since I have been thinking about summer and fond summer memories all week, I can't leave this out.
The best chocolate chip cookies I have ever had...and the recipe tracked down to share with all of you.
Kathleen's cookies as it was known for years ( now Tate's, is famous for its buttery, thin crispy chocolate chip cookies. As someone who much prefers a soft ( almost undercooked ) chocolate chip cookie and I admit, the raw dough itself, I must say these are to die for.

The only other improvement on the old toll house classic, is my husbands substitution of milk chocolate chips. So here you go, two options-The version below, and the old standby with milk chocolate instead of semi sweet. Oh, and if you are thinking this far ahead-either version is divine made into an ice cream sandwich...

Chocolate chip cookies are our signature item. They are thin and crisp and remain everyone’s favorite. Tate’s Bake Shop bakes and sells thousands a week and ships them all over the country.
Yield: 4 1/2 dozen three-inch cookies.
2 cups all-purpose pour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup salted butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon water
1 teaspoon vanila
2 large eggs
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two cookie sheets or line them with Silpat.
In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
In another large bowl, cream the butter and sugars. Add the water and vanilla. Mix the ingredients until they are just combined.
Add the eggs and mix them lightly. Stir in the flour mixture. Fold in the chocolate chips. Don’t overmix the dough.
Drop the cookies 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets using two tablespoons or an ice cream scoop.
Bake them for 12 minutes or until the edges and centers are brown. Remove the cookies to a wire rack to cool.

Summer Is in the Air

Yesterday was a lovely day ( or so I hear :) ) and Summer is in the Air. After a little ( and I do mean little...outing on Saturday ) I had to make sure I stayed mostly horizontal yesterday. So while my adorable and loving husband made us all a gourmet breakfast and took our daughter ( he is such a trooper ) to an early showing of Hannah Montana I hung out with the boys and played Scrabble at home. A few hours later, a friend came by with her son ( a good friend of our oldest's ) and brought with her some favorite mags. Hours later, when the Mr. took the kids to the pool and enjoyed an afternoon of swimming and ice cream, I took a virtual trip to some wonderful pools, beaches and gardens through the pages of said magazines.

Here was one of the treasures I laid my eyes on...A few years ago, knows as J. Harper Poor Cottages, this charming inn, Baker House 1650 has now added a lovely pool. The wisteria and outdoor areas took my breath away, Enjoy, even if only as I did, virtually.

Yesterday, I found myself looking at some of my favorite interior blogs ( many of them from Australia..) and found myself on one that I quite adore. Pink Wallpaper written by a new mom and interior designer has a lovely design sense and pratical tips and ideas for the home.

I loved this image...would be a great cottage kitchen or playroom set up for the kids..I can imagine ( let a girl dream ) all the kids stuff and art supplies organized with a fun word spelled out in these fab metal letters.

Ok, I admit it, I have a few blog crushes...Joslyn from Simply Lovely, Chelsea from Frolic and Marta from Marta Writes to name a few. As I have followed and watched Marta on her journey into motherhood, I admire her love, honesty and ability to connect with her best self and those around her..
Her post today reminded me of her love for life and experiencing all that it brings.

Loved her resolutions when she posted them, and to be honest about hopes and dreams..motivated to bring them to life and real enough to laugh along the way.

Heart of the home...my perfect kitchen

One of the sites I love most for home inspiration is Skona Hem. A fab magazine from Sweeden that I would LOVE to track down here. For now, a simple visit to their site every now and then, keeps me dreaming.
I came across what would be the perfect kitchen. Seriously, how could you not love a space where everyone can gather with ease, there is ample room to prep and cook, an office space for organization and a wonderful eating area. To me, the kitchen often feels like the heart of the home and this one says Love.

As you might know, spending a bit more time working from home. Have always loved a place in the home, away from everything else for writing notes, doing some creative work, and housing inspirational books and tear sheets.
I have learned over time to keep the space clean and organized and stocked with favorite pencils, a giant note pad fantastic note cards. With some simple tools for keeping things organized, the space provides a tranquil spot to recharge. Even for a few minutes each day.

Taking the plunge

Ok, after months of thinking and really sitting back and understanding what I love and what was important to us when we started our little concept I am taking the plunge. I so love connecting with people, sharing and learning more about people, resources, adventures and stuff that makes our life as parents and people easier, richer and more rewarding. A place where ideas, people, and a community can be created.
When my husband first started talking about what he wanted and hoped we could do, I did not really and truly understand. Now I do. And while bringing that dream to life is likely a bigger project and focus for us in 2010, for now I know at least that the desire for me is strong to start capturing the topics, connecting with the people and learning from others. There are so many people we meet, information that is sent, stories that are told and stuff that people send to us. My hope is that this will be a place to share those all.
So here we go, I am planning to work on some of the content this weekend, and go live on Monday.

Happy to be home

Happy to be home, albeit it on bedrest for ??? weeks or days the last 12 hours have been another lesson in change and taking life as it comes. Yesterday afternoon, was a bit hard to think about following the Dr's orders and imagining what the next days and weeks would look like. With the couch bed set up downstairs, fresh flowers and a pitcher of water it was quite a lovely little refuge on any other day. Coming home though, and thinking about what I would normally be doing in the late afternoon with the kids, working later in the evening on the computer and just hanging out with the Mr. took a bit of reflection. This morning, some how it started to connect.

There is a reason for all of this I can't help but think, another reason to sit and recognize that life is evolving again.
Having an opportunity to slow down, and connect with the changes in our life, surrender a bit and not be in control, realize how to connect with the people in our lives and not just be doing all the time is actually a welcome gift.
Of course I have come up with some thoughts for the next few weeks...how can I let go at work, but be of help in some way; taking the time to really connect with the Mr. and the kids when we are together, reading a stack of books that I have had for awhile ( and of course ordering a few new ones ) getting in touch with some friends I have not kept up with, posting tons of stuff on this blog that I have been carrying around for ages, queing up a list of movies on blockbuster that I have always wanted to see and waiting hopefully for 4-6 weeks for these amazing girls to arrive. Imagining life with them...

Here is to the next adventure....and the first book on my reading list! The Little Bee by Chris Cleave ( thank you T ! )

Gratitude

What a crazy few days it has been...All good now, and just in the waiting mode for more news but a little scare with the twins has put me in the Hospital for a few days with some likely bedrest to follow. Seriously, I feel incredibly thankful and am filled with love for my husband, our family, close friends and all of the people who are just here to help. Another moment to just pause and reflect on priorities.

With an amazing team of partners at work ( and an old dear friend who is one of the most intelligent, honest and motivating people I have known ) now at the helm of our much loved company in the last few weeks, I am reminded again at how important it is to know what you want, speak from the heart, understand the life journey you have committed to with your partner, trust and rely on others and know what you are truly best suited to do at different points in life. My husband ( and first true partner ) Our friends Tina and Greg ( business partners ) Everyone on the team who believed in our vision and made changes to join the team, and now most recently Chris.

To all of them I send my love and gratitude.

Proud

There are a few things that I would step back and allow myself to say I am really proud of.
In this post, I am sharing two. Pretty remarkable for me.

First, proud of my amazing family and the ability for me to finally see what a rich and full life can be filled with. Over the last 6 years, following my heart without a lot of knowledge and experience and with a true partner we have begun to create a life with meaning. It is at this point as well, that I can acknowledge who I am, how to become my best self and what our world can look like everyday. More details to follow.....

Secondly, to have created a concept and started a business that has begun to take shape as I imagined it in my mind.
Despite our timing ( who could have known! ) as we stay true to the vision, partner with people who are smart, creative, thoughtful and fearless, we can create something great.
Quietly we have been working to tweak our website ( with bigger plans in the work for later this year ) and I must say, I am really proud.

A treasured Spot

One of our favorite getaways, San Ysidro Ranch...came across this image in the early morning hours, and the memories came flooding back.
Our first weekend away ( after 2 weeks of 4 hour phone conversations ) an anniversary trip a year later, and last year a surprise trip for my fortieth. Though not in our current budget, looking forward to discovering other beautiful spots or revisiting some old favorites for an afternoon lunch, romantic dinner or just the amazing memories in my mind.

Always amazed how a Saturday afternoon drive and visit to a place of beauty can be as relaxing as a weekend away...

Time out, taking stock and giving thanks

Awake early on my birthday..after a little getaway ( thanks to a friend ! ) for the night at the Inn at Spanish Bay.
Words could not express how surprised we were when he presented us with a night at Pebble Beach, a day of golf for the Mr. and a fantastic spa treatment for me as a baby present ( in his words-what do you get 2 people who own a kids clothing company??)
As one who is often not so good at receiving gifts ( but love finding and giving them ) I was overwhelmed.

At the end of a long week, full of business and board meetings, kids getting sick, some emotional ups and downs, and the next phase of some major life changes, I started to think it might be a better idea to go at another time. Somehow, waking up in the wee hours of the morning Friday am, I knew that what I really needed was to get back to who and what mattered to me and to us, and not focus on how others chose to be, live or act. There was no anxiety, or agnst, but rather a reaching back out to how and who I wanted to surround myself with.
As the very early morning hours, turned to morning, I found myself slowing reconnecting. No need to judge, but a need to acknowledge, a need to be without others permission, it is all right there.

Getting to the Inn at Spanish bay around 4 on Friday, we took a walk along the gorgeous coast line, had drinks by the fire and listened to the sound of conversation and bagpipes as the sun set. Laughing and thinking forward about what we might be like at the ages of 60,70 and beyond. I am lucky to be married to this man who makes me laugh, makes me cry and makes every day more real.
Saturday morning, waking up, lounging and taking another walk on the coastline..a day of golfing and a trip to the Spa. Finding myself with a bit of time in the morning, I decided to head over early and planned to read and lounge about in what I expected to be a relaxing enviornment for a bit..calling a friend on the way put a smile on my face.
When I pulled up, I was blown away. The Spa was beautiful, tranquil and so aesthetically charming that I felt like I was transported yet again...As I walked up to the desk to check in, I could not help but think about how to extend my time here...

At every turn, a gorgeous, simple enviornment for relaxation..every detail perfection. A sitting room with a huge fire pit, dark wicker chairs and spectacular herb plants along the window, a garden filled with Lavendar in terra cotta pots and piles of white towels by the pool, snacks and water with the perfect amount of fruit to add a cleansing taste..and the treatments...
As I got my lavender pedicure, a conversation opened up with the woman next to me...we started talking about children ( her first weekend away from her 6 month daughter ) her IVF treatments ( at the age of 25 ) and her experiences as a new mom and lessons already learned..(Then we moved on to the Oscars, Sienfeld and Angelina Jolie ! ) In 60 minutes, a connection and learnings..

A few hours later ( ok, 5 ) after 2 treatments ( I had to add my first pre natal massage ! ) I left to pick up the Mr. from his day of golf. As we drove home later, and talked about the world, the economy and our lives...I was struck again by how lucky we are and what really maters. As some have said, when you are clear about what is important in your life, it is easy to make decisions ..when you create and take that path, stay on it..and when you need a moment to recharge take it..finally, when you need help ask for it, and when you are thankful, say it.

The moments

Easy these days to get caught up in what is not...Who would have thought ( and then fill in the blank ) On the other hand, find myself amazed by what is and the joys and gifts around me every day. Don't want to sound corny, but I am really incredibly full of love, thankful, humbled, challenged, proud and trying to take each moment and day as it comes.

So a few weeks ago, we did our first ever photo shoot, with our dear old friend Jo. Never having done this, we were somewhat laid back in our approach-Scott was out of town, so it was a busy Saturday with the usual playdates, sleepovers and weekend to dos. Sunday Morning, everyone gathered at our house. The kids were excited about the day and had planned the mornings treats ( hot chocolate, mini muffins and fruit ) and some of the clothes they wanted to wear. The gang started to show up, friends, Jo, her amazing husband and at last, the fun began. What basically started up as a giant playdate in the park, has ended up as a photo archive of so many things. Our beautiful kids ( our oldest is only in a few shots, as we don't make clothes for the over 10 set ), moments with their friends, a set of memories that only Jo could capture, a story telling about our concept and brand that unfolded over the day and within her images, an opportunity for her amazing talent to be seen by more people, and a moment to reflect on what we have worked so hard to build over the last few years.
With an ongoing to do list of what we can do better to the side, a moment to take pride in all that we are, all that we treasure, and all that we have done.

Perfect Boys Room

In the next few months, we have to find a place and move!
The rental that we are in right now, has worked out perfectly for the last 3 1/2 years, but with the arrival of the twins and some other life changes need to find a bigger place. Looking for a rental and then hopefully can buy a place again !! Right now, all three of our kids share a bedroom and we created a playroom which they seem to adore as well. There is nothing better then the sound of them at night, talking before bedtime and sharing their thoughts from the day. Sometimes we just sit outside for an extra moment and listen.

The Year of the OX

Always been interested in Astrology, birth days and Chinese Zodiac signs. Not Nancy Regan style interested, but a bit of insight, some amusement and learnings about people that over the years has seemed to be accurate ( and fun to share )
A friend had the Birthday book-which was incredibly accurate-you looked up the actual day some one was born, and viola a profile for each. When I read mine, years before meeting my now husband, there were 4 soulmates listed..alas he was one.
Wouldn't that make you a believer?

So here we are now, with our kids fascinated by understanding and celebrating Chinese New Year, and with friends and colleagues doing the same. Participating in some of the traditions and wishing all a wonderful year.

Naturally I had to do a litte more investigating to find out more about this year of the OX. Here we go:

The Ox is thought to be the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. This powerful sign is a born leader, being quite dependable and possessing an innate ability to achieve great things. As one might guess, such people are dependable, calm, and modest. Like their animal namesake, the Ox is unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint.

Decorating Dreams

Starting to think about the Nursery and have been compiling a bunch of ideas. Seem to wake up in the middle of the night with this on my mind ( along with a list of less exciting business and personal to dos!. We will need to move sometime in May so I have no idea what the room or house will look like but hard not to think more about. Here we go so far..

Amazing Bedding and those adorbable elephants by Rikshaw Design...from the minute I found this boehmian bedding via Decor 8 I have been a dreaming about it.

An chalkboard reframed in a fab old vintage frame after a trip to the Alameda Flea Market early one Sunday morning, this will be the perfect project for my father in law. He is signed up for one of the fantastic oversized bulletin boards he makes so beautifully as well.

With this great Love Poster from Made by Girl resting a top an expedit Bookcase from Ikea and some other great framed artwork and photos yet to be taken we will be all set.
Piles of books already read to our three kids, jellycat stuff animals and other treasures will be a part of this fun little world.

A white oversized rocker or glider ( yet to be found at the right price ) and this cool elephant side table from twos company ( found on Amazon for less then $ 100.00 )

Lastly these simple cribs from Ikea ( yes, we need two!! )

Inspiration

So proud of a new series of tee shirts we just designed and got in...So much of our vision and hope for Peek...Aren't You Curious was to really connect with parents and kids and to understand and celebrate all of the hopes and dreams that we have for our little ones. When one visits the stores, the experience of the enviornment, the music, the quotes, the photography, the childrens artwork and the playful but sophisticated nature of the stores truly comes through. With our products our goal is to design clothing that is stylish, childlike, thoughtful, interesting and that allows both a child and parent to feel like their own self comes through.

Big News!!

We've been keeping our lips sealed for about 16 weeks, and now are thrilled to share our big news, we are expanding our amazing family and thrilled ( and a bit amazed ) that we are expecting twins in late May. After years of hoping, some months of working hard with our medical friends here we are...The last few months have been pretty amazing, an easy first few months, lots of thinking about what and how we wanted this next phase of our life to look. Sharing the news with our family, our kids, close friends, our partners and team at work..I could not be happier.
Always wanting to have children and being really fortunate to have three beautiful step children, Scott and I have talked about this for years and all of my fears sort of held me back. Finally knowing, and being with some one who helped me see that what we both wanted could be.

To love...of my husband, our kids, the babies, good friends, my new blogging connections and to truly living what you love.

Over the last few days, have reflected so much on things..our life, family, work and gave some thought to how I wanted to spend 2009..sitting quietly and writing helped me to think through everything that was in my mind..bear with me!

1. Live what you Love
I saw as you know this beautiful quote a month or so ago. As I get older, there is a grace and humility in connecting with who and what you love and living accordingly. Knowing that following my heart, facing my fears, taking responsibility for my own actions instead of focusing on those of others allows me to truly be.
-Develop a stronger connection to my family
-Reconnect with old friends
-Spend time with family and friends more regularly.
-Build our company as we completely imagined it to be.
-Be realistic about what we/I can do well and focus.
-Pursue creative passions
-Speak from the heart

2. Live simply
Over the years, I have bought, coveted, aquired many things. As I spend time with my family and friends, and in my home, I realize that I have more then I could ever use and much more then we need. This year, I would like to truly enjoy the material things I have; the clothes not often worn, book not yet read, photographs still to be hung. Aside from things for the kids, my goal is to buy little to nothing. Read the piles of books, wear the closet full of clothes, play the games we have and truly appreciate the beauty that is already in our home ( and garage! )
As I get older, there is a beauty in simplicity and the things that
-Don't buy any more clothes for myself for 6 months!
-Read all of the books I have.
-Make use of what is stored in the garage/closets when we move this Spring/Summer.
-Unless it is for the kids, question the need.

3. Laugh Often
Don't really need to expand on this point!

4. Learn
Life is about learning, experiencing and growing..there are many things I would love to learn more about but think there is a beauty in picking a few and truly exploring and understanding
-A simple home based yoga and pilates practice. As I get older, I appreciate how much a daily practice of yoga or pilates can do-both mentally and physically. 20-30 minutes of focused time is all I need to begin. I would love create my own daily practice at home . The studio that I love in town is easier for me to visit on the weekends!
-How to be a better photographer

5. Practice Wellness
There are some simple things that make a world of difference in how I feel. Not sure why it seems easier ( habit? ) to fall back to other patterns, but want to incorporate these into my new routines.
-Develop some simple routines-drink water, choose foods that are nourishing, bring my lunch to work, pack a snack
take a daily walk, take a hike twice a month, practice yoga/pilates twice a week.
-Spend time with inspiring people.

Reflections

As we take some time off this week and spend some real quality time together as a family, I keep thinking and connecting with what an amazing year 2008 has been.
In the midst of it all, I realize I spend a lot of time thinking about work stuff-the challenges of a start up,all the things I want to do better/differently, juggling everything at work and at home, and the lack of real quality time with my Dad and brother and his family.
Then, over the last few days, I am struck at different times by some other thoughts.
Thinking about everything we have, and all that we have done this year. Challenges, learnings, allowing myself to make my husband and our family the center of my life, building friendships and community, reaching out more to my Dad and Brother, reconnecting with old friends, trying to speak more from the heart, judging myself less, trying new things.
It has been an amazing year.As I watched the kids over the last week, and stepped back and looked at who we are as a family and how we were living, I was incredibly proud of who and where we all are..

-Our first year of marriage and as a family of five.
-Started working on expanding our family, went through fertility treatments and IVF ( laughed and cried a bit along the way and was amazed by the bonding that occured as we shared our story.)
-Learned a lot about the balance between work and family and true parternship in life.
-Actively participated with the kids, their teachers and friends at school.
-Continue to build our business, expand the team, opened 4 more stores, sold 80 wholesale accounts including Barneys!!
-Learned a ton about what we could do better and how to stay focused..Raised money for our third and fourth year of operations.
-Reconnected with some old friends, made some great new ones..grounded in real and authentic values.
-Embraced 2008...facebook, blogs, flickr, twitter and truly found some old and new friends along the way.
-Discovered the blog world,sources of inspiration and creativity and some new friends.
-Fell in love with Etsy, and the talented folks that share their talents with the world.
-Gave voice more often to what was in my mind and heart..and started understanding family dynamics.
-Started the search for my birth parents.

I can't wait for 2009.

First seen in an ad, this Etsy seller, Hijirik Studio on
SF Girl by the Bay ( a weekly read ) I ordered this for a friend in Black and White, framed it and gave as a simple gift. After I got the first one, ordered 4 more, 3 as gifts and one for us...as a simple reminder everyday.

New Years Thoughts

Although New Year's Eve is often a time of resolutions ( this year we have something else planned...stay tuned..) for a few years I have tried to take the week between Christmas and New Years as a time with family and friends and a time to recharge. Since so many others are off, I don't feel the worry of being out of touch from the office, and work to dos. Of course things go through my mind, but I try and push them away and am always amazed at how much more thougthful, focused and motivated I then am when I get back to work. This year, for many reasons, no vacation, but time at home with the kids-day trips and adventures and some real down time.

This is often the time that I think back on how I am living, spending time, with whom, and taking care of self and family. A time to get some perspective.

Saw this ages ago ( and I am sorry to say, I don't remember where ) captured beautifully, in words and form a lovely way to live..
Enjoy and Live what you Love.

Our dear friend Abbie from Passing-Notes came by ysday to wish us Happy Holidays and bring us an amazing treat from Sketch in Berkley.
I had to share because not only do I know from past experience how fab the goodies will be, but as always the packaging and the design of the gift ( which she of course did !! ) is spectacular.

How ironic as well as we were planning our holiday menu for 14 on Christmas Day, that I had planned to make delicious salty almond sundaes with hot fudge ( or crushed candy canes and hot fudge ) for the kids ( and a few of us grownups! )

Now I must figure out as well who to gift these too...perfect for a little hostess gift or around valentines day for your little sweeties!

A Gift idea and a little self promotion

Catching up late yesterday on some blogs, was thrilled when I read Design Mom and she had not only a great holiday idea for gift giving, but also was suggesting that Santa head over to our on line sale and shop. ( Seriously, the prices are crazy !! )

So back to the idea...Gabrielle and her husband have a few simple ideas for gifts for the gifts for the kids; something to read, something to wear and something to play. At Black Eiffel this morning ( another regular read! ) the idea was lovely...Something for each in your family as follows; Want, Need, Wear, Read....

We shall now adopted these wonderful ideas as well!!

Since I am clearly weaving a bit of promotion into todays post, want to also mention that we started our Semi Annual 50% off sale today in our 7 stores...Since EVERYONE is in need of spending a bit less this season, we thought it best to start a bit earlier then planned. I dont think I have actually ever posted or written about a movie before, but even though we saw Slumdog Millionaire 2 weeks ago, I can't seem to get it out of my mind.
First, I must admit, I adore India as a country, a people and for the landscape, style practice of living. I had the opportunity to travel to India twice, and can not believe I did not make a trip to this glorious country happen...I think at the time the idea of going for only a few days for work was just not enough. Now, I think about the opportunity to go for 2 weeks or more and hope that I can make that happen at some point!

This movie though touched me in so many ways...The hope, the heartbreak, the failure to become a victim of circumstance, the reality of what was, and the development of what has become in this country and finally the love that helps to overcome it all. Everything about the story, the film and the characters touched me. At this time as well, the truth of what matters most came shining through. With love in our heart, we really don't need much else at all.

I was so excited when Joslyn from Simply Lovely and I firsted connected via her blog. I adore her sensibility, style and approach to life! When she asked me to be one of her featured bloggers this week, I was thrilled.

I continue to be amazed by the world online, the creativity, talent, intellegience, kindness and how on a daily basis ( or when ever I have a moment to have a look ) the inspiration that others most of whom I have never met bring a sense of enjoyment to my day.

Have been a bit remiss in blogging recently, and while I have a list of good reasons I miss it..knowing as I write, it gives me far more then the time it actually takes.

So as always, a huge thank you to Joslyn for welcoming me into her world in so many ways.

Todays the day....Making two pies for Thanksgiving after I do some work this morning and then catch up with friends.

Deep Dish Apple Pie ( and some Hagen Daz Vanilla Ice Cream ) and this delicious Chocolate Pie from Gourmet Magazine.

Some Holiday music, some warm tea and I shall begin baking this afternoon.

A few years ago, Scott got me a fantastic bike for Christmas. Moving to the Bay Area, and wanting to take up cycling it was the perfect gift. We are planning to get our youngest a bike for Christmas, and I could not help but think of putting a giant bow on it and placing it under the tree.

There are a few perfect bikes that come to mind...Here goes the first.

From Muji, the perfect city bike..Cycling around town, this would be a great way to get to and from the office, carrying the days wares in the basket. This one is only available from the NY store.

Found these blocks years ago at Muji in Hong Kong and as we were thinking about perfect toys for the store, I started looking for these again. The folks at Muji have created a stylish and fun sets of blocks for kids AND they look good when they are in any room in the house. These are also so great for an architect or world traveler!

For fourteen dollars, you can easily pick up all of the cities. I love New York and Paris.

I've decided it would be fun to get into the holiday spirit this year by posting about great gifts to give, outings, giving , traditions and generally wonderful ways to celebrate the holiday season.

My first post, something that has been on my must give gift list for ages. ( and I admit, the idea of getting one of these or a subscription is pure joy! ) Books from Persephone Books in England are a delightful gift for the holidays or any time of year.

Persephone prints mainly neglected fiction and non-fiction by women, for women and about women. The books are a joy to read ( think Miss Pettigrew lives for a day ) and beautiful to look at...Love the idea of a stack OR giving a subscription for a book a month. Imagine that little delight in your mailbox each month!

The sell primarily through mail order, and the books come wrapped beautifully..Or, if you find your self in London, stop by the shop!

Chicken Pot Pie

Totally making this chicken Pot Pie today ( the kids are out of school ) and this looks like a delicious Fall Dinner..
Our youngest LOVES cooking, and will be able to be Chef for the night!

From Bon Appetit, here is the recipe...

INGREDIENTS
5 applewood-smoked bacon slices
1 1/2 cups chopped onion
12 oz peeled whole baby carrots (about 2 1/2 cups)
1 8-ounce package trimmed haricots verts or other slender green beans, halved crosswise
4 teaspoons chopped fresh marjoram
1 3/4 cups low-salt chicken broth
2/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon crème fraîche
3 cups coarsely shredded chicken from 1 small purchased roasted chicken (skin removed)
1 sheet frozen puff pastry (half of 17.3-ounce package), thawed
PREPARATION
Preheat oven to 450°F. Cook bacon in heavy large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Chop bacon. Add onion to drippings in skillet; sauté until tender and golden, about 8 minutes. Add next 3 ingredients; stir 1 minute. Add broth; bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-high and boil until vegetables are almost tender and some liquid is reduced, about 8 minutes. Stir in 2/3 cup crème fraîche, chicken, and bacon. Bring to simmer. Season with pepper. Divide among four 2-cup soufflé dishes.
Unfold puff pastry onto work surface; roll out to 12-inch square. Cut into 4 equal squares. Top filling in soufflé dishes with pastry; fold edges down onto rims of dish. Brush top of crusts (not edges) with remaining 1 tablespoon crème fraîche. Cut small X in center of crusts; pierce all over with fork. Bake until crusts are golden brown and filling is heated through, about 22 minutes.
TEST-KITCHEN TIP
You can also make one large pot pie. Place the filling in a 9-inch-diameter deep-dish pie dish. Set the 12-inch pastry square over the filling, then fold down the edges onto the rim. Baking time will still be about 22 minutes.

Ok, we all know how hard it is to find a good hair salon and after moving from NY and LA, I admit, I am a bit spoiled.

Then, in C magazine last month I saw that Christopher Downs had moved from NY and opened this chic spot in Tiburon.
( He used to cut Christy Turlington and Nicole Kidman to name a few )
Called yesterday to make an appointment...and thrilled that there is a place in the hood with a great team and chic style.
Not sure I am going to want to get out of one of those great looking wicker chairs when they call my name!!

Perfect Fall Weekend

Not sure where the months are going, last weekend was ours to embrace Fall.

We had wanted to go apple picking for a few weeks, and last week, it all just fell into place..

It was one of those weekends that was just perfect...Saturday morning at the farmers market and then off to spend the day with our close friends. We drove up the coast ( highway 1 ) which is pretty spectacular any time of year, and then, off to apple picking with the kids. The kids were so excited and had so much fun it was crazy to see. Spending the day with their little friend Mr. D, is always a blast and today was no different..Running around in the orchard, picking and piling up bags of apples..Next up, my fun loving husband put our oldest in the wheelbarrow and after some individual rides, a new game was invented. Somehow, our amazing friend Jo, who I am always going on about, captured all of these moments on film.

Her husband was the best sport ever as the group wheelbarrow rides began ( and I might add, as someone who cycles about 30 miles a day, the only one truly qualified for the job )

A little picnic and some performances by the kids as the sun began to fall, and then after to dinner at a local spot for some delicious dinner and pie. ( If you make your way to Pescadero, check out Duartes, it is worth the trip )

Inspired by the pies from the night before, and wanting to spend Sunday morning in the kitchen ( and our PJ's ) we baked up some truly delicious apple pie ( thank you t. )

Knitting Class

Love the fall season....there are so many ways to welcome and connect with each season, and as I get older and perhaps think more through the eyes of our kids, I find myself thinking more about the simple and fun ways to enjoy each day and time of year.

Our daughter whose enthusiasm for life, learning and doing is quite contagious had asked me to teach her to knit a few months ago after she found a pile of yarn and some knitting needles. Inspired by an article I had ready about the simplicity of creating something, and a woman who decided to make and master only scarves, I first picked up some supplies with a friend and we taught ourselves some basic stitches.

Months ago, as we were going to spend the day with Scott's parents, her interest in learning the craft was sparked again. Seeing she and her grandmother knitting on the couch was truly a moment. She was excited to learn, as one of her close friends and one of her cousins both have mastered basic knitting!

So now, as we get ready to spend more time indoors, thinking it is the perfect time to sign she and a friend up for a kids knitting class...Yesterday found the perfect place, and signed her up!

Can't wait to see what she makes....Think I shall brush up on my knitting skills too and perhaps expand to scarves and blankets...

Rikshaw Design

Thanks to Holly from Decor 8, was introduced to Catherine from Rikshaw Designs and her amazing baby bedding...

Truly, I have never seen anything so hip, sophisticated and stylish for babies...available on line on her website, some fabulous boutiques and soon to be available at some of our stores!

So after reading the post on Decor 8 a few weeks ago, thanks to the internet, I reached out to Catherine and asked about her products and the possibility of carrying them in our stores. Come to find out, she too lives in the Bay Area and just launched her line this summer.

As fate would have it, she used the SAME photographer ( more on that later ) that we had recently met with and had been in our stores and loved them...

A few emails back and forth ( and this charming picture of a baby wearing our shirt and bloomers !! ) and we finally got together.

Next up a trunk show in our Corte Madera store...and as she starts to launch her business, the sharing of ideas and learnings that we have both had.

I am always thrilled to meet someone new and am constantly amazed at the power of this on line community...

Weekend Getaway..Bernardus Lodge on Sale

We have been working like crazy and have had a lot of exciting personal stuff going on...Needless to say, we are in total need of a little get away. The month of October, is also a month of celebrations...My fabulous husband is turning 40, we are celebrating our first year wedding anniversary.

At first, based on this crazy economy and are being in start up mode ( translation, basically earning no money ) we were wrestling with what and how to celebrate. The staycations of the summer were great, but thinking that the above milestones called for something a bit more special and I might add, he surprised me with a trip to my favorite hotel, San Ysidro Ranch back in March...

So after a little research, stumbled on the PERFECT place....and posting so any of you who are trying to be a bit thrifty right now, know that it is possible to plan some little getaways without breaking the bank. It just takes a little research.

So off we go to Bernardus Lodge in Carmel...there is a fantastic, book it now rate on the internet that was litterally 50% off their normal rates...A spectacular lodge and vineyard in Carmel, from which to explore the area, hike in Big Sur, Lunch at the Post Ranch Inn and Kayak in Monterey Bay.

I am counting the days.....

Having a little fall love fest with my adopted city of San Francisco. Over the last few weeks, I have been amazingly fortunate to have reconnected with some old friends, and our meeting spots have been some SF treasures that are somewhat new to me.

After living in SF, back in 1989 and missing New York desperately, I moved back to the City. Working for a SF based company for the next 14 years, I was back and forth to SF a few times a month, but never quite got the city. Now, almost 20 years later, I am officially living in the Bay Area and here to stay. Married, with 3 stepchildren and a business we started a few years ago, SF is my newly adopted city.

This time around ( for so many reasons...) I am loving so many people, places and things. I find myself reconnecting with old friends, enjoying adventures in and around the city, and really connecting with a few people that I could really imagine having lasting friendships with.

Yesterday afternoon, I met an old friend for coffee at a fantastic little spot, that likely every SF native knows about...Tartine Bakery is absolutely devine...Every cookie, pudding, baked good, almond croissant and afternoon snack is both delightful to look at, and amazingly good.

If you can not make it there...Check out their fantastic cookbook. The photos will inspire you to start baking..And, I might add, what a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning.

So I have been a lame, tired, overworked blogger.

We have had so much going on at home, at work and some exciting personal news that has kept us busy and off the computers...

One of the things we have been working on is a total site redesign and a really exciting new on line concept for our brand. Our dear Abbie, from passing notes is working on it with my husband. Trust me, I've seen some of it, and it looks great. Getting ready for an end of year, early January launch. We are planning to partner with some interesting people, and would love ANYONE who is interested in participating in our efforts to let me know. More details to follow so you know what you are actually in for.

In the meantime, Thrilled that our Fall update to our existing site is FINALLY up...Just a small Fall update. PLEASE let me know what you think about anything so we can improve.

What is not to love at a restaurant owned by two stylish New Yorkers, whose family apartment I adored in the September issue of Vogue last year, whose menu consists of old favorites; Grilled cheese, BLT's and Roast Chicken and who will be serving some of my favorite classic deserts...

A test run in October, a trip to New York with our kids and lastly perhaps a spectacular place for a little party..for the launch of Peek...Aren't You Curious in New York?

The Gift Closet Supplies

I remember first reading about this neat couple that re thought their lifestyle after having a child, moved and created a cool on line emporium...Three Potato Four has since become a little go to spot for great gifts, neat vintage kids stuff and a place for great ideas.

After RSVP'ing to 3 Birthday parties yesterday, and realizing we were back on the Birthday party circuit now that the school year began, the idea of restocking the gift closet became a focus!

I have learned that a few great gifts, tucked away makes life a bit easier once the school year is in full swing. Interesting gifts, favorite books and sports stuff are always a winning combination..Now that the girls are a bit older, some stylish accessories and such will be added to the mix.

The other trick is to make sure you have the requisite wrapping supplies.

My new find-Craft paper from U Line. Inexpensive and stylish this paper comes in sheets..so virtually anything can be wrapped in it...The kids can draw, write a note or decorate on it and we are good to go. Colorful, chic, artistic, personal and inexpensive...

A few weeks ago I found a great shop for gifts, and bookmarked some pages to come back to.

For me, New Year resolutions happen twice a year-once in the fall and once in January.

Less about a long list of things I am likely not going to do, but more about things, places and adventures I want to have. A quiet moment to reflect.

One thing that usually helps, is feeling organized. Closet cleaning, getting organized with the school year schedule, taking care of pending stuff...This little notebook/diary from Present&Correct seems like the perfect way to stay organized AND keep all of my notes and inspiration in the same place!

The perfect, simple design detail-bringing a bit of green and nature into any setting..

As summer light and flowers start to fade, a hint of green makes a world of difference

In our stores in Santa Monica and Corte Madera, we have giant animal topiaries ( Giraffes ) that are amazing...Kids see them from outside, and stare in awe. They are truly spectacular.

In our home, some tall simple topiaries in our entrance are the perfect detail.

In my office, two small topiaries on my credenza add the perfect element of green without the weekly worry of fresh flowers.

Check out this great garden emporium. These clever folks acquired J. Franklin Styer Nurseries and created an 11 acre treasure trove.. No doubt this will start to pop up across the country..

Tomorrow is the big day, September 7th.

Must admit, I am quite excited to take a stroll through his collection of products and perhaps pick up a few stylish things for our house and for little gifts. First heard about this shop and site from Rita Koenig via the September issue of Domino Magazine. Her wonderful column and blog is a daily treasure and I love the listing of purveyors in her article about shopping in London.

is pretty much worth moving to England for....Not that there aren't a ton of other reasons as well ( I am 100% British by birth actually ) but never have I seen such a holistic approach to wellness AND I might add, quality thought to there locations and approach.

First, as if the idea of purveyor of organic foods wasn't enough, these fine folks have a garden shop, a spa at Hay Market and stylish and convienient locations at Harvey Nichols and Selfridges. Now that is some fine planning.

In the meantime, as I dream of them ( or someone else ) opening state side...I will visit their site with frequency and think about to model a holistic approach here. At a minimum, we can all enjoy the recipe section and stay in touch with the seasons...

Continuing with my fun, dreamy decorating project....In our house our kids share rooms, and we are always having sleepovers..so this room would work perfectly !

The summer of 2008

Tomorrow morning the kids start school, with Mr B. entering 1st grade, Miss S. going into 3rd grade and Mr. J starting 5th grade...It is all going to fast.

Summer was a blur, and it feels like it was just February when we were talking about what and how we wanted to spend the summer...With a busy work schedule, and a desire to make sure the kids enjoyed a lot of different activities and simple times playing, swimming, running under the hose, we decided to find a variety of camps for them to enjoy. The plans were pretty simple, after camp, play time, weekends hanging out, going on adventures or playing with the cousins or friends. This was a year with no true vacation but rather day trips and adventures around town. What a great summer it was....with a real understanding of what we want ( and could afford to do ) the kids went to camps and learned a ton...making new friends, reconnecting with their step brother, being kids...I truly feel blessed.

Some of my highlights;

Fishing for crawdads ( 3 times ! ) and catching a ton!

Picking Lemons and Making Lemonade

Our first Lemonade Stand ( we did have some customers )

Learning about Egyptian history and art

Playing Field Hockey and Lacrosse

Mr. J and his first theatre performance

Seeing Dolphins for the first time in Nature

Mr. B doing archery for the first time, and getting 2 on the yellow :)

Hours of swimming with their cousins

A camp out under the stars

Playing catch in the park

Double sleepovers

Chef of the night

On Friday, the morning after Nie Nie day, this quote appeared in my inbox from Real Simple.

I don't remember signing up for any emails for Real Simple, and thought it curious that all of a sudden on this day...this quote. I thought these words summarized my feelings, and from so many posts I've read the feelings of many.

The quote stays with me, as I think of her, her family that we have all now come to know a bit, and many others that I have the joy of truly knowing and just meeting. It stays with me, as the person I want to be, and the hopes I have for our kids...

Happy Labor Day.....It's Picnic Time

Going on a hike and picnic this weekend...enjoying the end of summer and some time with the hubby and friends. First to the farmers market and then, on our hike.

On our menu, Mozzarella, Basil and Heirloom tomato sandwiches, peaches, lemonade and some fabulous chocolate chip cookies.

Flipping through some old magazines and on line home sites...Continuing to build ideas for our dream home.

Love the work of Mary McDonald and this living room....The ceiling is great, love all of the seating and the eating area as part of a family room or kitchen ( who really needs a dining room anymore )AND all of the books..May have to lose some of the formal elements to survive a house full of kids !
